A New Star Arises: Discover Asteria Theatre at Colorado mesa University

Two things have united humanity since the beginning of civilization: the stars above and the stories we share. Colorado Mesa University is bringing these timeless elements together with its new state-of-the-art  Asteria Theatre, which celebrates creativity, connection, and discovery.

Located on the university’s campus, the 860-seat theatre supports CMU’s music and theatre arts curriculum and has all the amenities required to support traveling Broadway productions, boasting the largest stage between Denver and Salt Lake City.

A Stage for Stories That Matter

At Asteria Theatre, the stars meet the stage in ways that inspire wonder and spark conversation. Whether you’re a lifelong Grand Valley resident, a student at CMU, or a first-time visitor, Asteria invites you to experience the transformative power of live performance.

Cultural attractions like Asteria draw visitors, fuel tourism, and create opportunities for the next generation of talent. “Inside Asteria Theatre, you’ll experience performances that embody our campus values of love, dignity, courage, humility, resilience, curiosity, and power. It’s a place where the stars aren’t just above us—they’re right here with us, shining brightly on stage,” shared CMU’s President, John Marshall.

The theatre is more than a performance space; it’s a destination for inspiration and opportunity. With diverse programming that spans genres and disciplines, CMU Stages is a catalyst for exploring critical topics and putting Grand Junction on the map as an emerging arts and culture hub.

Its interior design reflects the region’s desert landscape and unique topography, while the exterior features a starry façade filled with inset lights reminiscent of the theatre’s name. The theatre provides elevated event spaces, including a multi-purpose room, a private club level, and a rooftop deck among its backstage amenities. Three seating levels within the audience chamber provide an intimate experience for attendees, while a mechanical orchestra pit and large stage provide expansive abilities for a range of performances.

An Economic Catalyst

Asteria Theatre broke ground in March 2023 and required more than 900 construction workers to complete it over 18 months. Construction of the theatre utilized alocal vendor, Shaw Construction, and received tremendous support at both the state and local levels.

The $54 million development was made possible through the support of the state legislature, which invested $39 million in the theatre, representing the largest investment the state has ever made towards CMU, and an impactful capital campaign led by chairs Doug and Jamee Simmons, which raised $1.5 million. Additionally, the Dave and Mary Wood Foundation contributed $100,000 to the campaign through CMU’s partnership with the Western Colorado Community Foundation.

CMU’s Asteria Theatre represents an investment into our community that underscores the region’s commitment to nurturing emerging talent and providing opportunities for attendees across all demographics to be impacted and connected by the performing arts. At the Grand Junction Economic Partnership, we recognize the power of art and creativity in uniting, uplifting, and amplifying the voices of our communities.

Together with Colorado Mesa University and our incredible community partners, we are excited to see Asteria Theatre become a cornerstone of the greater Grand Junction area’s cultural and economic future.

CMU Stages is the umbrella under which all performing arts at CMU, whether at the Asteria Theatre or the Moss Performing Arts Center, will be presented. For more information about the Asteria Theatre, CMU Stages, and upcoming events, visit cmustages.com
