Today, St. Mary’s Medical Center is announcing a $3 million donation toward a new health sciences center at Colorado Mesa University (CMU). It is the largest single donation the hospital has ever made – and the largest donation ever received by CMU. Community Hospital is also making its largest single donation, $1 million, toward the new center.

The Grand Valley medical community serves 1/2 million people across the Mountain West and healthcare is one of the largest industries in the area. The new center will go a long way in grooming a skilled workforce to support the industry. According to The Daily Sentinel, “the new center is to house the university’s newly created degree programs for physician assistant, physical therapy and occupational therapy, which is about to graduate its first 15 students in May with another 47 in the pipeline over the next couple of years…To put it into perspective, the number of students who applied to be in that first graduating class was around 1,500, said Amy Bronson, director of CMU’s physician assistant program.”

The new CMU health sciences center is already under construction and is expected to be completed by the fall.
