GRAND JUNCTION MSA

Grand Junction became a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) in June 1995. The MSA is entirely contained within Mesa County and has a current population of 139,082. The average annual growth rate of 2.48% can largely be attributed to the lifestyle that is attractive to so many people. Growth is forecast to continue over the next 25 years and at a stronger rate than the Denver area. In-migration is the main cause of the population increase, typically accounting for over 80% of the gain in any given year. This trend is expected to continue, as migrants are attracted to the area's new west feel.

The educational levels of the community are continually improving resulting in a labor force with increased skills and quality. The median age is 37.8, which is slightly higher than the Colorado average of 34.3. This reflects the number of retirees who relocated to the area in the 1980s, attracted to the excellent medical facilities, the mild dry climate, and the strong sense of community that exists in the area.
